Screening and Conclusion

Today I have screened it to my client using google drive and e mail.

This was his feedback. His feedback was good, and he gave me some things to improve but only little things to do with the credits. His reaction was okay but was broad, I am happy he likes it but he also sound like he is uncertain which makes me feel un easy. He has also asked me to fade out the music, which I will be able to do but I will have to do that in a different software.

Conclusion

I am happy with how it has been with working with this client. I am glad that I wasn't left to do all of this to myself, its good to know that my client will help me when it comes to decision making through out the production, creating discussions on different ways of creating different scenes. I am thankful that he is very patience with all the stuff that has happened. Sometimes it can be annoying of how broad he can be with responding to art styles and what scenes can look like, but once I give him the final piece of work he gives me all the improvements I need and things that he might want to add or change, which I am happy to do.

Overall I am extremely happy with working with this client and I hope we can continue in the future,
I have been working with this client for over a year or so now and I have had no problems, and I am happy to work with him again.

Background colour design

I had some confusion with my one of the backgrounds in production, so I contacted my client about this.

he replied with

With this I was able to clean up and make sure that this background is what he wanted, by me doing this I have made sure that I can create this scene right and that I don't have to waste time changing it, even tho he has asked that if he doesn't like it will it take long to change, and no it wouldn't and have done it in a way that its only a few clicks away to be changed, but with me asking him what he prefers helps me out by making sure it have the right one now so I don't have to go back in the future.

Animatic / Storyboard

I have recently been able to get myself a Wacom cintiq and with this I was able to create the an animatic and a storyboard together to show the client and myself where everything will be and what will be in each scene, the cintiq will also make this happen faster.

Once I finished the animatic, I had to send it to the client but the I could get the movie into an email as a attachment so to get round that I uploaded it to Google drive and then share the link to the animatic in the email, and with the success of it working that way I had to consider that this might have to be the way I screen the final piece to the client.

This is the email I sent him.

and he replied with

I found the reply very helpful, he gave me feedback on the animatic and told me things that I had to change or add. This felt like we was a team again. I am happy that he replied giving me more information because now I can make sure that he gets what he wants, he was fast with his reply again which makes it helpful for me as I do not want to wait around for him.

Radio silence

Its been awhile now since I have spoken to my client, this is because of a few things.

First thing is that I have just been getting on with all the sketching and work. I have worked with this client before so I am just making sure that I can create the animation to what he would want, i already know the character designs so it has come to the point of where I am just working, and I am happy that he left me to it because then I was able to just get on with it and I can update him once certain things are complete for example the animatic.

The second problem is that I have been having some housing issues with me and my family which has caused problems for me to be able to do my work and has made it hard for me but I am stilling continuing and getting the work done. I have told my client about this and he has been very nice about it and has been very patience with the work, and I am happy that my client is so understanding.

Mood boards 2

While working on sketching I realised that my mood board from before was only comic based and not comic strip based, so I decided to create a mood board on comic strips, and send him them both again to ask for opinion.

This is my email.

And he replied with this

As he said in the email that he preferred the comic strip mood board instead, I'm happy that I still create it and contacted him about it because I didn't know he might of wanted it in that style, but now I know what he definitely wants. I am happy that my client has replied fast and has been honest about what he wants.

Mood boards

I sent my mood boards that I created.
I gave him a lot to choose from, three different speech bubble mood boards, a font mood board and an art style mood board. He replied with this.

This is a great reply and I couldn't ask for anything more, but its very straight forward and there isnt any form of discussion but there is still an answer which is good but also bad, because now i know that he wants me to follow the comic strip style but the style that he wants is still broad. With this I can now start production, and for me it feels like the clients passion has gone down and I thought that he would put it a lot more input then what he has put it so far.

Script and Audio

I requested for a scripted and he was happy to do that. Here is what he gave me.

Hello Tom
As requested below is the script.
Also could you let me know when work will start on the other strips
And this is more of a side project than directly involved with helpineeda.com.

Warm regards
David

In grandmas home, will be in the living room so will have a sofa and picture frames in the background.

Dad "where should we go today" dad is looking happy
Lisa "I want to go home" lisa is looking grumpy
Dad "No were going out" Dad is looking frustrated.

Cut scene to the entrance of a beautiful looking forest.
Dad "alright which way should we go" dad is looking happy.
Lisa "umm that way" looking happy she points to the left.
This goes to a scene of a dark haunting forest, large trees twisted in to strange shapes, with even stranger leaves on their branches.Dad and lisa is running through this forest.
Lisa "Follow me daddy" she is smiling
Dad "OK" he is smiling
The next scene is from behind them and shows them peering through the trees and small bushes. Dad and Lisa are now holding hands. This scene is still quite dark but has a light shining in from the water.
Dad "You see the water"
Lisa "Yeah"
The last scene is bright (sunlight) with a sort of angelic glimmer to it. Dad and Lisa will be standing on top of a hill. Below them is clear water all around in the center there is a rocky island with some trees and bushes on it. Further over is the other side of the river bank which has large but nice looking trees.
Lisa "we made it"
Dad "yeah"
Lisa "its a beautiful world" singing.
The image than fades out with the singing.

I am happy now that I have a script. I feel the script is really good and tells me a lot more about the story, environment and atmosphere. This is a lot better for me because I can now use this to create all the scenes creatively. There was no problems about obtaining a script and it didn't take him long to produce it.

He also gave me the audio that will be used in the animated comic strip itself.
Originally I was going to create an animatic for the client to give to his producer for the music but it has been done the other way round now and he has sent me over the audio, I found this helpful because I am able to work with the music and I can create the scene and time the scenes right with the music so it can flow better.
I think the music will go very well with the animated comic strip. The audio has all the emotion that we want and creates the right atmosphere.
I really found my client really helpful, it actually feels like we are working together on this project, there was no problem with obtaining the script at all, he created no fuss and it didn't take him long to reply and give me the script either, I found this very helpful and efficient because I didn't have to wait and i could start thinking about my scenes and I am going to draw them. With the music I do feel that the client rush in with the music; it felt rushed but it was a good thing that this happened and I'm happy that I got the music first instead of me creating an animatic and then it not working with the audio itself.

Work experience presentation

I presented this presentation to my peers. This presentation is about work experience and where I would like to work. I was reasonable and chose studios near me in London. I think that my presentation went well. I enjoyed looking for work experience but I will not need to worry about this anymore as I have found a client instead.

Storyboard concept

The client sent me an email today, with the attached storyboard mentioned in our first meeting.

This storyboard gave me an a little insight into what I would need to do. I personally feel that the idea would work and that it can become a great story, but I know that to improve it I would have to re create the storyboard and make it more of appealing.

To make it better and more appealing, me and my tutor discussed that asking for a script and using that instead would let me create the visuals for the story using maybe more shot and with different angles, so I have decided that I am going to ask him for a script so I then will be able to create my version of the storyboard.

I am happy that the client gave me this storyboard, he showed me his passion in the project and showed me that he had already thought about it a lot, This makes me glad that I am working with him because I believe that he will put input and wont leave it up to me.

Client meeting 1

Today I meet up with my client to discuss what it is that he requires. I personally thought the meeting went well I was able to get all the information I needed and I was able to use my technical knowledge to help the client with deciding on what he wanted. He told me he wanted me to design a comic strip and to then animate it. I was able to show him different forms of animation that he could consider; I showed him what an animatic was and what an animated comic strip was, and with this he was able to pick between them or if he wanted I would create a full 2D animation of the comic strip. The animatic and animated comic strip that were shown to him were videos I was using to research different ways of animating a comic strip. After watching the different types of animation my client decided to that he wanted me to create an animated comic strip. I am really happy to have my client pick this one because I have never created animated comic strip and I believe that it would be a great experience for me and a really good skill for the future.

The client provided me with a basic storyboard to work from. I will re-design the storyboard, creating characters and backgrounds making it more advanced. The client and I went through the storyboard and what different ways I could create it and if the client wanted certain things created in a certain way. The first thing that I the client wanted to work out was the music. The client has a producer that will create the music for me but I would need to give the client the timescale to work the music with the animation. To fix this I suggested that I would create an animatic for him to give the producer the sense of timing for the music.

I also found this meeting very helpful to find out his thoughts and design process of what he wants the characters and scenery to look like, he also told me that Whipscross forest is exactly the image he imagined, with him saying this I have decided that I would go and take pictures videos and record ambient sounds for primary research. The client wants the scenery to be mystically and gloomy creating the sense of fear, confusion, and gloomy, and at the end the scenery will be more harmonised. When he told me about this I suggested to create shadowy transitions, using shade to create the gloomy effect and when they emerge from the forest with will become really bright like the end of a tunnel.

The characters are based of himself and his daughter and he is calling this animation 'Daddy's daughter: It's a beautiful world'.

while in the meeting I was thinking of ways I can do the project and I think I will use Photoshop and Illustrator for the design process drawing, inking and colouring. For the movement of the panels and characters I thought of two different software that I can use, first one being a piece of software that I haven't used much After effects. This way will work because I can use the puppet tool to move different parts of the picture. The next software I can use is Flash, with Flash I can use tweens to move the panel in and out the stage as well as the bone tool for movement of the character.

I think that with Flash it will be easier to move the scenes and panels but for moving the characters I think the puppet tool will work better, maybe I could use both to do different parts. In my research you can see where I got this from with one of the videos I looked at.

Client

My client is David Anglin and I have been working for him for a while now and on the current project I am creating comic strips for him, and he asked me if I could create them as apart of my college work, unfortunately I am not able to do it because it has to have animation in it. David then said why don't you create an animation based of one of the comic strips.

Here are some emails about us discussing when to have a meeting and discuss what to do. (highlighted in yellow)

Sorry Tom I think you misunderstood me, i meant that you should check the beautiful world strip to see if you can animate it, and if you just carry on with the short comic strips first.
thanks
